steve has written an op-ed in "the new york times," and the title is "the radical is romney, not ryan." "president obama should use tuesday night's debate to press mr. romney to defend -- or even just explain -- these proposed cuts, which would be far more draconian than those advanced by his running mate, paul ryan. mr. ryan is widely viewed as the real fiscal hawk, but in key areas, his views on spending levels are actually closer to mr. obama's than to mr. romney's. with respect to nearly half the budget, mr. romney and mr. ryan widely diverge from each other. mr. romney is calling for a huge increase in defense spending, roughly $2 trillion more over the next decade than ryan wants to spend which is only $400 billion above mr. obama's budget. even though the military is not asking for such an increase. such an increase would force giant reductions, about 40%, in everything that's left. and katty kay, with libya on the front pages and sort of this growing scandal over security there, with syria in complete chaos, while we all know the defense budget needs to be cut over the next de

laid out a plan, the ryan/romney plan. not just a contrast in style but in substance. >> so what's the next debate look like, ed, as you guys prepare for the second presidential debate? >> well, it's a town hall format, as you know. it allows for an opportunity to hear from real people and their concerns. they have a lot of legitimate concerns and we're looking forward to continuing this momentum that we got out of the first debate and that paul ryan and his big win over sitting vice president. i can't recall a time when the challenger for the vice president to the vice president bested the vice president in the debate and when you look at a poll, most people saw in paul ryan someone who had a command of the facts, a clear and positive agenda for the future and someone who is very serious about the issues, the serious issues that we face as a country. we're going to continue to highlight those big choice differences before the american people. >> ed gillespie, thank you very much for being on the show. we'll talk to you so

paul ryan, bless his heart, has a harder time lying than mitt romney does. he actually believes in what he has to say which is a fault in some politicians but hopefully he will be able to talk about the issues if he accurately reflects the issues that he and mitt romney can agree on. at least up until recently i think that could be a win for democrats. >> doesn't that really put ryan in a bind, tad, where he has to try and defend the top of his ticket but at the same time protect his own future if, in fact, he's not elected vice president? >> yeah, i think it's very difficult for congressman ryan. he's going to have to lie about two sets of records, not just one. the truth is that the ryan plan, the proposal was being attacked before it was picked. after it was picked, romney affirmed that he would go along with it which includes turning medicare into a voucher program, cuts in education, cuts across the board. if ryan is going to run away from that, i think he's going to have a hard time. joe biden understands these policies. i think he's going to confront

they put the romney and ryan ticket on the defense. but i've heerd governor romney say this. he says i want to work in a bipartisan way. i want to work with democrats on capitol hill. i want to do what george w. bush did with no child left behind. that's to allow the congress -- that is to allow the legislative branch to be a part of the process. and thus in the process create or draft a piece of legislation that we can all work with. so i think it's a combination of both answers, alex. >> president obama had tough reviews following the first debate. what do you think is the greatest challenge in round two? >> the white house said to make adjustments. i think it's to make the adjustments without overcorrecting in some way. i don't think the voters want him to come out completely swinging in some kind of way that would be unlike him in this debate. he's got to somehow figure out how to be himself. perhaps to talk about some of the specifics that doug mentioned. to step up his game a little bit and to do it which will be dichb than what we saw the first time around. he'll be ta
